Hotel Oakland was constructed between 1910 and 1912 at a cost of over $3,000,000. Presidents Wilson, Coolidge and Hoover were guests, as were Amelia Earhardt, Sarah Bernhardt and Jean Harlow. During the depression, the hotel went into bankruptcy several times. In 1943 the U.S. Army used it as a hospital. The Veterans Administration used the facility as a hospital until 1963. Standing vacant for 15 years, in 1978 a it was remodeled into senior housing. Occassionally, it has been used as a film location.
