Freight terminus of the Lehigh Valley Railroad's Elmira and Cortland branch and key interchange point with the West Shore and New York Central Railroads. Operational under LVRR control from 1883-1967, the yard had five layby tracks, a small engine depot and turntable and a small passenger station which operated through 1941. For the first 50yrs of operation Canastota was also a transshipment point for coal onto canal barges via a LVRR-owned dumper trestle located on the South side of the canal.

After the LVRR closure of the Cortland branch East of Cortland in 1967 the yard was abandoned and was not used by Conrail when they took control of the NYC and LVRR in 1976.
