  • Harrietsfield was named after the wife of Colonel William Thompson who lived in the area in the 1780s. In 1790, Casper Gruber arrived, and nine other families by 1827. The community's population has been increasing slowly because of easy access to Halifax via the Old Sambro Road. When NS was to be populated with Deer, two were dropped off in Harrietsfield (don't remember the other place) alot of land in the area was built over trash. The school, both industrial parks (behind the old esso, and The Fancy site) many of the houses, etc. When I was growing up there, I remember the lot for the new school baseball diamond was covered in trash, then they covered it over with dirt. Same with both Ind parks. The park behind the old esso, if you go to the back of the park, and climb down the hill of trash, it seems about 12-15 feet high. I remember this, because I was coming back from exploring the brook system, and finding this hill of trash, and then ending up behind the lot. Even our house lot had stuff buried in the back yard. Many of the places did. Conway's old auto salvage was next to the Brook that feeds thru several lakes (Governor's Lake System) and connecting brooks. Two men made money on this exploit - Bernie Fancy and Steven Murphy. I've also been told by several people that the trailer court was a land fill area, covered over with dirt, and then trailers put on it. I'm sure if someone was to dig up all the trash that's buried in Harrietsfield, they would fill the halifax landfill at least twice.
