This church and school formed the nucleus of a successful Reconstruction-era African American crossroads settlement. The current church is the third to stand on this site, with the original building dating back to 1882. The school building functioned as the settlement's primary school until 1940, after which it became a community gathering space. Finally, the cemetery (located on the south side of Route 49) contains the known graves of about 240 of the community's citizens, with possibly more unmarked graves existing.
