  • Sher Ali, a Pathan revolutionary and a freedom fighter, killed the British viceroy. Sher Ali, like other Indian freedom fighters were kept in prison here when Viceroy Lord Mayo visited the islands and was stabbed to death in 1972, just 15 years after the unsuccessful first war of Independence against imperial forces. Mayo was the only viceroy to be killed on Indian soil.

  • the story, as usual have many missing links. as every one knew, atleast a student of subcontinent history that Mayo was interested in reforms. he wants to introduce county system and more relax franchise yet bureaucratic & autocratic British elite was against such ideas. before his arrival, intelligence officers not only clear the area but also ensured that all prisoners were remain in their cells. but with the help of some insider, sher ali was out from his cell. anti reform agenda supporters use him. the other important thing is who was sher ali, why was he there? why some intelligence officers were against Mayo? yet out of stereo type Nationalism some supper revolutionaries included his name in freedom fighter list.
