Chittoor( Telugu :చిత్తూరు), also known as Chitturu, is a city and district of India's Andhra Pradesh state. The city has a population of 152,966 (2001 census). Chittoor is famous for Temple towns. The Tirupati-Tirumala(the most renowned piligrim spot in the world), Kanipakam, Sri Kalahasti, Mogili and Ardhagiri temple towns belong to this district. The Chandragiri Fort,ruled by Sri Krishnadevaraya,the Great Rulers of South India(History reveals Diamonds were sold in the streets in huge heaps in his regime) is famous for its rich culture. It lies in the Poini River valley of southernmost Andhra Pradesh, on the Bangalore-Chennai National Highway 4. Commonly called as Mango City, this city exports mangoes to other countries from its market yards in Bangarupalyam and Penumur Mandals - it is a great market center for mangoes, grain, sugarcane, and peanuts. Its industries include oilseed and rice milling. It's also the home town of Nutrine Confectionery Co., a major chocolate manufacturer in India
