The Butterworth Deep Water Wharves is a cargo terminal of the Port of Penang and a free commercial zone. Built in 1969 at a cost of RM60 million, the wharves are capable of handling 2.5 million tonnes of cargo each year.
In 1996, the wharves were designated a Free Commercial Zone (FCZ) by the Malaysian federal government. This allows for duty-free transhipment and break-bulk of raw materiel and finished goods.
