Ford Green Island

Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, John Burroughs and Harvey Firestone camped and fished here during their then famous Vagabond tours of America. Ford was so impressed by the site that he had a major production plant built here, opening in 1923. If you drove a Ford made before 1980, chances are its radiator, heater and springs were manufactured here. Sadly, Ford closed its Green Island shop in 1988 and the enormous complex was demolished in 2004. I personally toured the vacant plant in 1996. It was an awesome facility boasting its own rail center and shipping docks.
