Ararat valley

The Ararat valley(Armenian: Արարատյան դաշտ Araratyan dasht), is one of the largest plains of the Armenian Highlands. Today it divided between Armenia, Turkey, Azerbaijan and Iran. It stretches west of the Sevan basin, at the foothills of the Gegham mountains. In the north, the plain borders on Mount Aragats, and Mount Ararat in the south. It is divided into two sections by the Araxes River, the northern part located in Armenia, and the southern part in today's Turkey. The Medieval Armenian historian Movses Khorenatsi recorded in his History of Armenia that the Ararat plain was named after King Ara the Handsome, the great-grandson of Amasya. Ararat Valley is the cradle of the Armenian people, over a long history 7 out of 15 capitals of Armenia were located in the Ararat Valley: Armavir, Artashat, Dvin, Vagharshapat, Yervandashat, Bagaran, and now Yerevan.
