This was the home of Francis Gillette (1807-1879), one of Connecticut's earliest and most prominent abolitionists. Gillette opened his home to fugitive slaves as a stop on the Underground Railroad. Many properties in Connecticut have claims to being such places of shelter, with varying levels of historical veracity, but Francis Gillette's home is recognized definitively as one such location.
