hotel, high-rise, 2020_construction
273-foot, 28-story modernist hotel completed in 2020 as Radisson Hotel New York Times Square. Designed by Gene Kaufman, it is set far back from the street, with a 1-story wing at the north end extending out to the sidewalk, containing the hotel's main entrance, with glass doors. The rest of the ground floor has glass-and-metal retail storefronts behind a landscaped courtyard.
The upper floors are clad in beige brick, with grey-painted pre-cast concrete at the south facade and south bay of the east facade, as well as narrow bay near the north side, where the facade is not quite as recessed. This northern bay has paired windows, with a projecting grey concrete section overlaid at the 17th-27th floors. The three middle bays have double-windows (the center one even, and the other two with their outer panes narrower). The narrow bay next to the projecting section has square single-windows, and the wide south bay has wide double-windows with a wide inner pane and very narrow outer pane. There are three "red cross" features on the east facade, where three floors of the three middle bays have bright-red painted concrete piers and spandrels instead of brick, creating 3x3 grids. These occur at the 8th-10th, 17th-19th, and 26th-28th floors.
The south facade overlooking the 1-story building on 36th Street has no openings, faced only in pre-cast concrete, painted light-grey (west side) and dark-grey (east side), with the confluence of the two colors forming a large, angled wedge extending from bottom to top. The rear, west-facing facade is similar, but with a bay of windows at the north edge.
The hotel contains 321 guest rooms.
