sanitation / hygiene service, parking garage
6-story modernist parking garage completed in 2009 for the Department of Sanitation. Designed by McKissack, it provides office, garage and maintenance space for sanitation personnel and vehicles. The entire 45,000 SF floor area of the garage has four truck storage floors, a central ramp, employee parking, repair space, offices, locker, and shower rooms, and additional storage space. Spanning over West 56th Street, the highlight of the structure is its “wave wall” element, which is made of curved glass facade and follows the bend of Twelfth Avenue on the west side.
The ground floor and the ends of the curving west facade are clad in beige concrete panels with a grey granite water table. The north facade on 57th Street has a curtain wall of glass-and-metal on the 2nd-5th floors, similar to that used on the west facade, and a concrete 6th floor. At the east end is a 7-story office section clad in grey cast-concrete panels. Its ground floor has a recessed, stainless-steel entrance bay on the left, with glass-and-metal double-doors, and to the right is a high-set, short window band. The upper floors of the office section have three bays of square window openings with center panes divided by white metal framing, and rounded, horizontal white metal sills separating the lower panes of each opening. Recessed between the office section and the concrete west (where the wave wall begins) is the curtain wall section of the north facade, with a grid of metal framing and greenish-tinted glass. The ground floor here has two garage doors, flanked by pedestrian doors set in glass-and-metal surrounds. The 6th floor has four square openings matching those on the office section.
The ground floor of the curving west facade has several bays of square windows, as well as some blind niches in other bays. There is another, larger garage door next to the two windows bays north of the opening where 56th Street passes through the ground floor of the building, with the upper levels continuing across overhead. This section above 56th Street is slightly recessed from the wave walls and has a flat glass curtain wall in a differing style. It has the same green glass, but without the distinct metal framing seen to the north and south. These north and south sections have lighter-tinted glass spandrels between floors and rounded metal sills below each floor, as well as vertical white metal framing elements dividing the wall into wide bays, and pairs of white metal framing outlining square center panes in each bay. Some of the floors also have rows of metal louvers. There are nine bays on the upper floors of the north section. South of the 56th Street passage, the ground floor has two more wide garage doors flanked by metal service doors, three more square windows, and another service door. There are seven bays on the upper floors.
The walls of the passageway are clad in concrete and are lined with rows of garage doors on the south side, with one at the east end of the north side. There are also a few metal service doors. The east elevation's upper floors, overlooking 56th Street, has a short curtain-wall section; the rest of clad in cast-concrete panels.
At the south end of the west facade is an open-air salt shed structure, about three stories tall. It has a metal roof supported by four orange steel girders, and halfway down the south facade, a concrete wall begins, sloping upward to the east.
