When constructed in 1944, the U Plant was nearly identical in function to the T Plant. The U Plant was originally one of four planed to be built to chemically seperate plutonium from uranium. However the process was so effecient the third plant was never built and the U Plant was used to train plant operators. During the 1950s, U Plant had a special mission in recovering uranium that had been placed in waste tanks during the rush of World War II.
