The Clapham Junction rail crash happened on the 12th December 1988 near Clapham Junction station. 35 people in 3 trains died and over 500 were injured.

A local train from Basingstoke was heading northbound when a signal suddenly changed to Red. The driver braked but overrun the signal and immediately stopped. An express train from Poole then crashed into the back of the local train, and an empty train coming the other way hit the wreckage of the Poole train.

Pupils at the nearby Emanuel School saved the lives of many stranded people. A report suggested introducing Automatic Train Protection (although this would not have prevented the accident), but this was not until about 10 years that this was fully introduced.
