Manhasset is well-known for its high-end premium open-air shopping center, The Americana Manhasset. The center is situated along Northern Boulevard's "Miracle Mile" which has many pop-culture references. From 1956 until approximately 1963, it was known as “Fifth Avenue of Long Island.” Beginning sometime in 1963, the name was changed to Americana at Manhasset.
The Americana first opened in 1956 as a simple community-style shopping mall; however, in the 1980s gradually it catered to luxurious boutiques such as Ralph Lauren, Williams-Sonoma, Brooks Brothers, Oilily, Prada, Giorgio Armani , Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Hermès, and Burberry, among others. In addition, a short distance west of the Miracle Mile is Lord & Taylor, which is historically the first branch store in America. Manhasset has supported branches of some of the most well known stores in New York over the years: B. Altman and Company (formerly the west side of The Americana), Bonwit Teller (now Bed, Bath, and Beyond), Abraham & Straus (now Macy's), Bloomingdales Furniture Outlet, Best & Co., Arnold Constable, Franklin Simon & Co., Peck & Peck, W. & J. Sloane and J.J. Newberry. It became its own small edition of Fifth Avenue.
In the most recent itineration, a master plan was created by Peter Marino who has also designed many of the individual stores. Extensive landscape design was implemented by Oehme, van Sweden & Associates.
