The Apsley - Upper West Side

USA / New Jersey / West New York / Broadway, 2330
apartment building, senior citizen home, postmodern (architecture)

230-foot, 18-story postmodern residential building completed in 2022. Designed by SLCE, it consists of a 6-story box stacked on top of a larger 12-story box. The lower section is clad in orange-red brick with cast-stone banding at its top two floors, above a 2-story limestone base. The double-height ground floor has a central entrance on Broadway, with plate-glass windows on either side and across the north facade on 85th Street. The upper floors have eight bays of tripartite windows and single-window end bays on the east facade, and three tripartite window bays on the north facade, flanked by single-window end bays. The floors are grouped into pairs from the 3rd-12th levels, with brick piers and spandrels. Within the paired groupings, each bay has a glass spandrel.

At the 12th-floor setback there are terraces with pergolas. The upper box is clad in cast-stone and has eight tripartite window bays (the northern one wrapping around the northwest corner) and a single-window end bay at the south. The north facade has three tripartite bays (with the western one wrapping around the corner to meet the west facade), and a single-window end bay at the east. The corner bay sets back above the 16th floor. A mechanical floor at the top has black metal panels and louvers between the piers, each of which extend above the roof line.

The building contains 156 assisted-living units, with about half reserved for residents with Alzheimer’s Disease or other memory issues. It is operated by Sunrise Senior Living.
