"Fairy" penguins inhabit this area. They return to burrows here in the evening after spending the day fishing.

A large interpretive centre run by Parks Victoria helps protect the creatures from the public, while allowing visitors to enjoy the spectacle of the Penguins parading out of the sea.

"Fairy" Penguins are more correctly called Little Penguins. They are true penguins, and they have dark bluish feathers.

Summerlands is also part of the breeding grounds of Silver Gulls and Muttonbirds (Shearwaters).
