Believed to be one of the oldest places of continuous Christian worship in London, if not the whole of the UK. The river Fleet once flowed in front of it where the Pancras Road now is - in fact it still does, just in a pipe underground. The graveyard used to extend into the area now taken up by the Midland mainline railway to the east. The graves were dug up and moved when they built the railway, and the gravestones attractively arranged around the base of a tree by a young architect, Thomas Hardy, who went on to be a famous novelist. The tree has since grown up and around the gravestones, giving the impression they emerge from the bark.
Also in the graveyard is the tomb of architect Sir John Soane and his family, which was the inspiration for the classic K2 phone box.
It is a Grade II* building.
