lake, wetland
Formerly Bussey Brake. Brake is the local name for the seasonally flooded wetlands. Measuring some 2600 acres, it becomes a shallow lake when fully flooded. The brake was created in the 1950s, fully walled off by levees and served as the emergency water source for the local paper mills in Bastrop. With their closures in 2012, the brake was donated to the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. The brake was drained in 2014 and water from the Bayou Bartholomew was pumped in. The new lake was then restocked with game fish.
