The Soviet War Memorial in the Tiergarten is one of several Soviet War Memorials in Berlin. It was built by the Soviet Army in 1945 to commemorate the 80,000 Soviet soldiers who died during the Battle of Berlin.
The monument ended up in the British sector of West Berlin after the city was divided. Throughout the Cold War, Soviet guards were present at the memorial, sent out and changed regularly by the occupying forces in the Soviet sector.
The memorial continues to be maintained by the City of Berlin.
