Founded in 1887, Saugus Cafe is the oldest operating restaurant in Los Angeles County. It was originally the dining room in J.H. Tolfree's Depot Hotel. The hotel was located in the Saugus train station when the station was located at its original location on the southeast corner of San Fernando Road and Drayton Street. Sometime during the 1890s, Tolfree moved the diner across the street, and in 1899, the diner was given its current name by a former Southern Pacific Railroad employee, Richard Wood, and his brother who purchased the deed from Tolfree.

In later years, the cafe would serve presidents (Benjamin Harrison and Theodore Roosevelt), movie stars (Clark Gable, Marlene Dietrich, Charlie Chaplin, and Mary Pickford--to name a few), and many others of note. After the Wood family sold the cafe to Bill Rolls in 1954, Rolls tore down the cafe and rebuilt it a few feet to the south.

The Saugus Cafe is open 24 hours a day and serves excellent food.
