Elandsfontein Phosphate Mine

South Africa / Western Cape / Saldanha /
 mine, open-pit mine

Elandstontein Phosphate Mine is located on the farm Elandsfontein and is owned by Kropz which is a explorer, mine developer and miner of fertilizer feed minerals. The Elandsfontein deposit contains the largest sedimentary phosphate deposit in South Africa. Construction of the mine box cut started in August 2016 and production commenced in June 2017 with a life of mine extending to 2032., 15 years in total.

Each year up to 5 million tonnes of ore will be mined with an expected recovery of 1.5 Mtpa of phosphates. Ore will be processed using flotation where silica sand and phosphate are separated by floating the silica sand in water which leaves behind the phosphate. The mine also utilizes the roll-over mining method where vegetative topsoil and mine overburden from a new
mining section will be dumped in a mined out area. This method ensures continuous rehabilitation of previous sections as new sections are mined.
