In the past, this area was known as Stengel Airport. Carl Stengel bought his first plane in 1930, long before most people even imagined getting into one. He had operated Stengel's Flying School starting in the late 1930s from the Gainesville Municipal Airport. When the Alachua Army Airbase took over Gainesville Municipal Airport in 1941, Stengel moved to his operations to Stengel Field, located on Archer Road. The first depiction of the airstrip was on the uly 1943 Orlando Sectional Chart. The 1944 US Army & Navy Directory of Airfields described Stengel as having a 3,800-foot sod runway, oriented east-west.
The 1945 Haire Publishing Company Airport Directory described Stengel Field as having three hangars, and listed the operator as Don Dobbins. According to the University of Florida Housing website, following WWII, faculty apartments were constructed at the Stengel Air Field & managed by the University. The airstrip closed in 1971, and construction of Butler Plaza began the following year.
