hill, archaeological site, ancient civilization
The name Knockainy is derived from Old Irish Cnoc Aine, or "Hill of Aine." Dotted with ring-forts and barrows, this hill was the political and ceremonial center of the Aine branch of the royal dynasty of Munster (Mumu), a role perhaps shared with Rathanny (Rath Aine, "Ring-fort of Aine") just to the south.
