Established in 1877 on Lafayette Street, the company was incorporated in 1880 as the Detroit Machine Screw Works manufacturing screws, nuts and bolts. Five years later in 1892, it purchased a three story building at the south west corner of East Atwater Street and Riopelle Street (later part of Eaton Chemical). A change of name to Detroit Screw Works followed in 1894 and in 1900 the plant was acquired by New York based Standard Screw. Expansion to the south took place in 1905 with the construction of a three story building. An additional three stories were added in 1907.
