George Peabody, American financier and philanthropist (1795-1869), died here, a house of his friend Sir Curtis Lampson. At the request of the Dean of Westminster, and approved by Queen Victoria, Peabody was given a funeral and temporary grave in Westminster Abbey before he was laid to rest in Harmony Grove Cemetery, in Salem, Massachusetts.
