Cauvery Reservoir - lifeline of Karnataka. Krishna Raja Sagara (Kannada: ಕೃಷ್ಣರಾಜಸಾಗರ), also popularly known as KRS (ಕೆ.ಆರ್.ಎಸ್.), is the name of both a lake and the dam that causes it. For information about the settlement near the dam and reservoir, see Krishnarajasagara. The dam is across Kaveri River, in Mandya District near Mysore in Karnataka state. There is an ornamental garden attached to the dam, called Brindavan Gardens, making it a popular tourist place and picnic location.Built across the river Kaveri, Krishna Raja Sagar Dam, Mysore is India's first irrigation dam. The dam got its name from the Maharaja of Mysore, Krishnaraja Wodeyar who financed the project. It is located 12kms north-west of the beautiful city of Mysore. The farsighted engineer Sir M.Vishweswaraiah designed the dam and with his sharp intellect transformed the dam site into a beautiful garden with musical fountains and ponds downstream.

The Krishna Raja Sagar Dam of Mysore is approximately 8600 feet long and 130 feet high with a reservoir spread around an area of 130 sq.kms. It is constructed at the confluence of three rivers – Kaveri, Hemavati and Lakshmanatirtha. The dam is well connected to Mysore and Bangalore. The dam was amongst the first in world to use automatic sluice gates and represents the marvel of civil engineering of pre-independent India. A boating pond is also available to cross the dam from the north bank to the south bank. The northern edge of the dam is beautified by colorful dancing fountains. Illuminated by bright lights, the fountains make people dance and jump to its vibrant music.

The existence of an ornamental terraced garden called Brindavan Gardens, laid out below the dam makes it a popular picnic spot and tourist attraction. You can experience the enthralling fairyland ambiance in the myriad of cheerful musical fountain and dazzling lights in the evenings. The Brindavan Gardens has been meticulously planned and are built on either side of big artificial lakes called the South-North Yards. The sight of the plethora of fountains, cascading and springing into variety of shapes in the midst of the serene ornamental gardens is a rejuvenating experience for the tourists. Tourists in large numbers frequent the place during weekends to enjoy the aesthetically illuminated fountains and gardens. The scenic beauty of the locale has made it a popular shooting location for various Indian and foreign films. The beauty of the dam can be enjoyed throughout the year though the best season to visit the dam is during the monsoon months of June-July.

The dam is also an important source of water for agricultural operations of farmers of Mysore and Mandya districts. The Visvesvaraya Canal is the main water providing channel drawn from the dam. The construction of the reservoir has been beneficial for the production of sugarcane, rice and other crops scattered over thousand acres of land. The dam has also a horticultural nursery providing good variety of fruits and flowering plants.
The Krishna Raja Sagar Dam at Mysore is one of the most prominent sightseeing in Mysore . The dam has bought prosperity and fortune to the people of the area. Tourists flock there to witness the twirling musical fountains and the dazzling colors in the bosom of tranquil surroundings. The dam serves as a model to several other dams in India. So the beauty of technicality mingled with nature is fabulously displayed in the form of Krishna Raja Sagar Dam and its adjoining Brindavan Gardens.
