The westernmost part of the Lithuanian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), where the bottom of the Baltic Sea reaches a depth of 60 to 130 meters. The Lithuanian EEZ borders the Swedish EEZ. Considered a dangerous area due to the post-Second World Soviet sinking of German chemical weapons. After the war, about 40-55 thousand tons of chemical weapons ammunition containing approximately 13 thousand tons of toxic substances were buried in the Baltic Sea.
On 21 December 2016, the United Nations (UN) General Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution submitted by Lithuania on international cooperation in the exchange of information on chemical weapons sunk at sea and their impact on the environment.
