In 1888, John B Dyar established the Michigan Radiator & Iron Manufacturing Company and constructed a foundry and accessory buildings on Trombly Street to make cast iron radiators. Three years later in 1891, Michigan Radiator& Iron Manufacturing merged with Detroit Radiator and Pierce Steam Heating Co. of Buffalo N.Y. to form American Radiator with the Trombly Street factory becoming known as the Michigan Plant. In 1894, the plant started to produce home heating apparatus and by 1919 the factory employed 372 workers.
