William Muir Finck (1854-1936) moved to Detroit from upper New York state in 1885 and went to work for overall maker Hamilton Carhartt in 1891. By 1902, Finck established his own overall manufacturing firm with a three story factory on Gratiot Avenue. It was a time when working men wore overalls and not jeans. By 1920, the Gratiot Avenue plant housed 300 workers. Employing the slogan "They Wear Like A Pig's Nose" the company prospered with plants in St Louis, Seattle, San Francisco, Dallas and Livingston, Montana. The company's product line was later expanded into overalls for women. WM Frick & Co. was acquired by Carhartt in 1960 and discontinued shortly thereafter.
