The farm was established by the Federal government in 1944 as the Dominion Horticultural Substation Smithfield, to further research into apple production following experiments conducted with local apple producers. Located in one of Ontario's major fruit and apple producing areas, the original 100 acre farm devoted 50 acres to fruit investigations, 35 acres to long term apple experiments and 15 acres to investigating crops for canning. In 1953 an additional 200 acres were acquired and 6 years later a pilot processing plant was completed.
In 1960 the farm became an Independent Experimental Farm and was no longer directly managed by the Central Experimental Farm in Ottawa. The farm was closed in 1996 and the land sold in 2012.
