This was the site of second Haarbocht corner which was built in 1983 to bypass the original northern loop. It was a mid speed corner with plenty of overtaking opportunities.
It was also the site where Australian GP500 (now MotoGP) racer Michael Doohan crashed heavily in 1992, and almost ended his career prematurely. Despite of massive lead in championship standing, prior to his crash, it was not enough to save his championship as he had to rest for 8 months. Effectively handing his championship to his rival Wayne Rainey.
