  • For about 100 years there was a school on Thompsons Island. It was called the Farm and Trades School. It closed in the 1960's. The population of the Island was about 70 boys; aged 10 to 16, and about 30 instructors. The boys lived on the island and were allowed vacations with their families for 10 to 15 days a year. The lenght of the vacation depended on their behavior. The boys went to school four hours and worked four hours a day. The main work was on the farm. The school had its dairy herd, beef herd, pig farm and chicken coops. That and about fifty acres of vegetables made the island almost self-sustaining.
  • It is now home to an Outward Bound facility
