barge, United States Army

These 2009-built barges are utilized by the US Army to transport all manner of bulk materials from ship to shore in areas where port facilites are undeveloped or in waters too shallow to permit oceangoing craft from reaching the unload facilities. Consisting of two types of barges, the standard LASH-type covered LxW lighter and the larger LxW JLOTS (Joint Logistics Over The Shore) platform, both types can be carried aboard the ships of the Cape M Class of LASH barge carriers presently in service with the US Maritime Administration. One of two such barge sets presently held in the MARAD Reserve Fleets for use aboard the active Cape M Class vessels, this set is assigned to serve aboard the SS Cape May (T-AKR-5063) which is presently layberthed in Norfolk.
