  • I would like to describe Bathanwala under the following headings: Belongingness: As per official record of the Govt. Middle School Bathanwala, I was born on December 6, 1961, (Wednesday) in the house of Ch. Muhammad Din Gujjar, Numberdar (late) at Village Bathanwala. The then exact home address was as, “Village/Post office Bathanwala, Via Baddomalhi, Police Station Ra’yya, Tehsil Narowal, District Sialkot”. I read the ‘Yassarnal Quran’ from Maulvi Hidayat Ali. It was the early morning of June 9, 1972, when my family left Bathanwala as a consequence of land dispute. My classmates included Iqbal Jutt, Anwar Dogar, Riaz Gujjar, Nawaz Tarkhan, Muneer Lohar, Riaz Bhangoo, Abdul Razaq Mew, and Amanat Ali Taili. Most probably, I am the 2nd son of Bathanwala who did PhD after Prof. Dr. Sadiq Ali Gill (the niece of Maulvi Safdar Ali). Indo-Pak war 1965/1971: I was a small child during the 1965 war. Our area remained calm whereas the cross-border fronting Indian village ‘Dhiyanpur’ was vacated by their people. In 1971, I faced the last devastating and horrible flood in Bathanwala that destroyed the rice and other crops all around the village. I was a class 5 student when the Indo-Pak war of 1971 broke out. The gunfire thunders in this area started on December 8 after the evening and the whole village was vacated within few hours. Our two families spent first 3-4 days at Baddomalhi and remaining war days at village ‘Rangla’ near ‘Wahndo’ in District Gujranwala. There, one day, just after the ‘Fajr’ prayer in the mosque, I got the unforgettable news of the fall of East Pakistan. Bathanwala escaped destruction except a small damage to the southern wall of ‘Shia Jamia Masjid’ located outside the village. Location: Derived from ‘Bath’ a gote of ‘Jutts’, Bathanwala is located in the east of the famous railway station town Baddomalhi as the 2nd last village facing Indian border surrounded by Jamkay, Nathaywali, Daewala, Gill, and Shahkot. The rail was the only link with Lahore and Narowal for the region and horse ride was the common luxury to move around and catch the train as no pakka road was available in the whole area. Notables: included Maulvi Hidayat Ali, the Juma Prayer leader at ‘Barri Masjid’ Maulvi Safdar Ali, the Juma Prayer leader at ‘Shia Jamia Masjid’ Muhammad Din Gujjar, Numberdar Muhammad Siddique Jutt, Numberdar Nathoo Ghani, father of Iqbal Jutt Noor Muhammad (Member Union Council) Master Sardar, School Teacher/In-charge local post office Master Ghulam Muhammad (Fauji), School Teacher Master Abdul Sattar, School Teacher Master Zubbair, School Teacher Hassan Din Dogar Miraj Din Dogar, father of Anwar Dogar Allah Rakha, known as doctor Qammar, known as doctor Castes: Castes residing there included Kumhar, Jutt, Joghi, Dogar, Gujjar, Araeen, Kashmiri, Julahay, Tailli, Lohaar, Tarkhan, Mallah, Bhangoo, Qasaee, Maachi, Naee, Mochi, Barwalay, Bharaee, and Iesaee. Gardens: Bahmananwala (aam, umrood, jaman), Bajaywala (aam), and Weersingwala (beri). Religious/Social/Famous Places: Waddi Maseet, Shia Maseet, Imambarra, Araeenyanwali Maseet, Kumharanwali Maseet, Choti Maseet (Maulvi Allah Rakha), Mirzaeenyanwali Maseet, Girja Ghar, Gurdawara, Union Council, Mehal, Watto da Chobara, Daira, Murad de Hatti, and Babay Aziz de Hatti. Mohallahs: Kumharanwala, Hakeemanwala/(Joghianwala), Julahayanwal, Dogaranwala, Araeenyanwala, Juttanwala, Lehndi Thathi, and Charrhdi Thathi. Schools: Govt. Primary School (Girls) and Govt. Middle School (Boys). Crops: Gehoon, Chawal, Kapas, Gunna, Makaee, Jawar, Bajra, Masoor, Chana, Mash, Kharbooza, Tarbooz, Till, Maddal, Sarson, and Taramera. Festivals/Religious Events: Major festivals and religious events included Choti Eid, Barri Eid, Barra Din (Xmas), 10 Moharram, Besakhi, Sanwan (women folk dance gathering held in Sawan in the ground between Nathaywali and Bathanwala). Besides these, the cultivation of sugarcane, harvest of wheat, Behak (joint animal sitting in the crop fields for natural fertilizer), sugarcane crushing and preparation of ‘Gurr’, and Kabadi matches used to be seasonal festivals. Long-live Bathanwala!

  • Dr. Shaukat Ali Raza Sahib - I am a Sikh and as i was told by my grandfather, our ancestors were from this village. They were known as 'Babe ke'. Couple of them were notable names as they were in Ranjit singh's army, (Mehtab Singh & his son Hira Singh). The ancestral home was always in this village. We are Bhinder Jatsikhs. Would you by any chance know anything ? I would be much obliged for any information.
  • G. Bhinder, Nice to read about you. I'll try my level best to explore things by my next visit to the village.
  • Thank you very much, Sir. Best
  • G Bhindar sb I got an opportunity to visit Bathanwala and tried to get some clue about Mehtab Sing. There was a oxen-driven well (khoo) in south of Bathanwala near Bathanwala-Shahkot kacha road with the name "Mehtab Singh Wala". The well fell a victim of river Ravi land erosion and is no more existing. I also brought pics of a deteriorated palace built by Sikhs in Bathanwala. Reportedly the builder was a minister in the court of raja Ranjeet Singh.
  • Thank you very much Dr. Shaukat Ali Raza Sa'b. Appreciate you remembering to find out. Wish you all the best.
  • G bhinder sb it is very pleasure to me my ancestors were also from bathanwala. We are also bhinder. Please send me your contact I D. WhatsApp etc.
