The so-called "Bridge of Death"

Ukraine / Kyyivska / Prypyat /
overpass / flyover, radioactive, road bridge, viaduct (bridge construction style)

Here's a popular urban legend that the bridge its name: On the day of the ChNPP accident, approx. 500 Röntgens/hour radiation could be measured here. Those who walked on the bridge to get a closer view of the plant, later died after receiving high doses.

Miliciya (police) was on sentry duty on the both sides of the bridge. From the policemen who was on sentry duty during that day, noone survived.

PS 1000 Röntgens and higher in medecine is so called "The death under beam". The death in the near hours... no chances... even today... 500 Röntgens dose in today's medicine is 40-60% to survive, but at that times there were not any serious experience in dealing with radiation sicknesses. And there's very low chance to survive (5%) without medical help.

  • You see, it's a difficult question but, I saw a Red Forest which is near to the bridge and which was killed by the radiation quite quickly, so i'm sure about the radiation's level - if it's critical for trees, for people it's a perfect killer...
  • I guess a lot of people also survived? Maybe it depends on when people came and how long they stayed?
  • Sure you're right. Received doze of radiation depends on one's level and the time of staying in the radioactive zone.
  • Avoid this place like it's radioactive. Oh wait...
  • I added some medical info about radiation sicknesses. I am not a medic but my father does and he talks much about medicine.
  • >I guess a lot of people also survived? Maybe it depends on when people came and how long they stayed? Well, let's imagine that someone stayed on this bridge for 15-20 min, so she or he had got the dose of about 120-200 R, in this case medical help is necessary, otherwise the risk of death is very high. So let's imagine that PROFESSIONAL doctors took care of this poor he or she. In this case the possibility of survival is 60-80% in case of TODAY'S PRODESSIONAL treatment. I know nothing about the teatment of that times.
