Homigot Lighthouse (Pohang)

Korea (South) / Kyongsangbuk / Ochon / Pohang / Daebori, 22l—2
 lighthouse, foghorn

The Homigot Lighthouse was built in 1908 to prevent ship grounding in this area after a Japanese ship-wreck in 1907.

It was designed by a French architect and Chinese engineers assisted in the construction. The octagonal shape of this 26.4m/87ft high lighthouse, the tallest in South Korea, reflects a Western style and is also characterized by the curved profile slightly narrowed from the bottom to the middle. Being constructed entirely of bricks, it differs from other lighthouses using steel frames. This lighthouse has six stories with the ceilings of each floor having plum-flower patterns inscribed, the symbol of the Joseon dynasty's royal family.

The lighthouse is still active and operated by Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.

Homigot Lighthouse is Gyeongsangbuk-do Monument #39
