Streamline Moderne (architecture), Art Deco (architecture), historic landmark, 1936_construction, International style architecture
The V.M.S. Kaufmann House, also called the Kaufmann Lacey House, is a Minneapolis-designated landmark house originally built in 1935-36 by James Brunet of Wessel, Brunet & Klein in the International style (Art Moderne). Oil company salesman V. Mel Kaufmann was impressed by the examples of modern architecture at the Chicago World’s Fair in 1933 and wanted the same style for his weekend house. Brunet was a recent architecture graduate of the University of Minnesota. It was featured in a 1937 issue of Architectural Forum. It was designated a Minneapolis Landmark, offering protections, in 1987. In 1989 a small addition was approved by the Heritage Preservation Commission and made above the garage; a plan for a third floor was designed but never implemented.
In 2001 the house was purchased by business executive Roger Lacey and his wife Neroli. In 2011 the current owner, decided to expand the house, and Lars Peterssen, AIA, of Peterssen/Keller came up with a way to add a 3rd floor that looks like it was always a part of the house: the HPC approved the additions after a 100-page application to meet all guidelines. The family had to move out for the 9 month renovation.
The home won a 2014 RAVE Award (Residential Architects Vision & Excellence) for design excellence. This project also received a 2012 AIA Minnesota Home of the Month Award for design excellence, and was featured in the Star Tribune. The home also received a 2012 Minnesota Preservation Award. Coen + Partners won an award for their landscape work on the project. The home is featured on the cover and inside of the book Legendary Homes Of Minneapolis City Of Lakes. It was a part of the AIA MN's 2011 Homes By Architects Tour.
