Named after its owner (a preacher that had a black beard), this island was suposed to be deserted. In 1829, a sailboat anchored to escape from heavy weather and found, living on the island, a group of 60 fugitive slaves. Although some soldiers (190) were sent - a month later - to capture them, they managed to escape, with help from local farmers that warned them.
