Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (commonly known as Florida A&M or FAMU) is an historically black university located in Tallahassee, Florida, and is one of eleven institutions in Florida's State University System.

FAMU was founded on October 3, 1887, as the State Normal College for Colored Students; classes began with fifteen students and two instructors. Originally, Tallahassee had two universities, One for whites (Florida State) and one for blacks (Florida A&M). Although both universities are now integrated and multi-racial, Florida A&M still maintains a strong African American identity.
