Blue Ridge Tunnel and Rockfish Gap

Built by Cladius Crozet, this 4,263-foot tunnel was the longest in the US at the time (1856) and one of the longest in the world, a remarkable feat of engineering, dug though solid granite with only hand drills and black powder, a decade before the invention of dynamite.

The current tunnel is located to the SW and parallel to the original, Crozet tunnel

Shenandoah National Park

Rockfish Gap was also the site of the 1818 meeting of diginitaries, including Presidents Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, and Chief Justice John Marshall, where Charlottesville was selected as the site of the future University of Virginia.
