Hotel Tuller was, built in 1906 by builder and architect, Lew Tuller. Unable to find someone to operate his hotel for him, Tuller entered into the hotel business himself.Additions followed in 1914, 1923, and 1929. When complete the Italian Renaissance style hotel was fourteen stories high and featured 800 rooms. By 1928, Tuller was experiencing financial difficulties and the hotel went into receivership.

With the decline of central Detroit, rising maintenance costs because of outdated infrastructure and lack of maintenance, the hotel deteriorated and became a home for poor seniors, prostitutes and drug addicts. It was finally closed in 1976 and after a long period of deterioration, it was demolished in 1992. The site is now the location of a gravel parking lot.

  • A stinkin' parking lot! In my best opinion, this struggling city should've made the right decision to salvage another histroic landmark that was once a special gem of Detroit. Now I can clearly understand if the Tuller was beyond any chance of repair, but this is another painful reminder of the struggling city that once florished with pride. If the Tuller just held on a little longer, it might've been a good idea to convert it into apartment lofts. But still, the implosion of the Tuller Hotel makes a deeper cut into what was once Detroit's glamourous history.
  • it was most likely damaged beyond repair due to lack of maintenance, or would cost more to repair and reopen than to just tear town. the sad thing is, if it was repaired, the city would be left with *another* empty building... many abandoned buildings in the city are already magnets for crininals, squatters, rapists and drug dealers...
