Officially "Downtown Super Neighborhood 61", the downtown area of Houston consists of the central business district, which includes office towers, loft apartments, upscale hotels, live theaters, nightlife, a large park, a convention center and three major sports venues. The current downtown area also includes the area of Old Chinatown.

Main Street in downtown Houston opened in its current form officially in January 2004 with the running of the (then-new) light rail, unfortunately, that left Main Street with one narrow lane in each direction with little to no opportunities to turn left. A block of Main Street is even closed for use as a pedestrian mall. For many years, downtown Houston featured the Foley's department store, but less than a decade after it changed hands to Macy's, the building closed and later demolished. The downtown area also features an extensive underground tunnel system that links numerous buildings and features mostly fast food establishments.
