Chequers is a country house belonging to the Government, which is used as the Prime Minister's non-London residence. It is also used by Prime Ministers to entertain important guests as a special privilege. A Grade I listed building, it was built in 1565 for William Hawtrey remodelled in the early 19th century by William Atkinson. It was gifted to the Nation for use by the Prime Minister by Sir Arthur Lee in 1917.
