place with historical importance, NRHP - National Register of Historic Places, interesting place, railway bridge
Close to this small creek crossing is where the final spike was driven that completed the first transcontinental railroad crossing in the United States. Contrary to popular belief, the actual final link was not made in Promontory Point, Utah, as is often taught. That connection did indeed connect the Union Pacific Railroad with the eastern railroad network, but at that time there was no railroad spanning the Missouri River, and thus no *continuous* line from east to west until this section of the Kansas Pacific Railroad was completed on August 15th, 1870. There is a historical marker located just west of here along the interstate that commemorates the event.
The site of the Comanche connection is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), as well as on the Colorado State Register of Historic Properties.
