செந்நாக்குழி - smelting unit

The pond inside the fort is called neeravi, and the other pond is called pani nazhalm. These names themselves proves that they are chaste Sanga Tamil words.

இந்தக்குழிக்கு அருகாமையில் காணப்படும் பொற்பனைக்கோட்டையிலுள்ள குளத்திற்கு நீராவிக்குளம் என்றும், இந்த பாறை அமைப்பிற்கு மிக அருகிலுள்ள குளத்திற்கு பனி நாளம் என்றும் பெயர் வழங்கப்பட்டு வருகிறது, மேற்கண்ட குளத்தின் பெயர்கள் இந்தப்பகுதியின் தொன்மையை உணர்த்துகிறது மேலும் செந்நாக்குழி என்று அங்குள்ளவர்களால் அழைக்கப்பட்டு வரும் இவ்வமைப்புகள் சிவந்த அல்லது செம்மை என்ற நெருப்பின்நிற பண்பைக்குறிக்கும் சொல்லான “செந்” என்ற ஒற்றுடன் “நா” என்கிற நெருப்பு சுவாலையை குறிக்கும் பெயர்ச்சொல்லும் குழி எனும் இடப்பெயருடன் இணைந்து “செந்+நா+குழி = “செந்நாக்குழி” என்று அழைக்கப்பட்டு வந்திருப்பதன்மூலம் இது சங்க காலத்தை சேர்ந்த தொல் பழங்கால உருக்கு ஆலையாக இயங்கியதையும் , தமிழர்களின் பண்பாட்டு வழக்கப்படி அவ்விடத்தில் நடக்கும் தொழிலையோ , அல்லது வேறு சில காரணப்பெயர்களிலேயோ இடங்களின் பெயர்கள் வழக்கிலிருப்பதை நாம் காண முடிகிறது இதே போன்றதொரு காரணப்பெயரோடு செந்நாக்குழி என்று அழைக்கப்பட்டு வருகிறது
கிடைக்கப்பட்ட தகவல்களும் , தரவுகளும் , பெயர்களும் சங்ககாலம் தொட்டே இவ்விடத்தில் இரும்பு உருக்கு ஆலை இயங்கியதை உறுதிப்படுத்துவதாக அமைகிறது.

The ancient furnace at Porpanaikottai is called as Sennakkuli, which is chaste Sanga Tamil Noun for a pit with red fire which is similar to tongue. The Tamil word Sen means the colour red, and the word “na” stands for the fire flames which danced like tongue and the word kuzhi depicts pit. From this linguistic analysis one can easily understand that these pits were once served as furnaces, where fire burnt like tongue.
These data confirm that these furnaces must be functioned from the Tamil Sanga Period.
