Morden Colliery Historic Provincial Park (Nanaimo, British Columbia)

Canada / British Columbia / Ladysmith / Nanaimo, British Columbia

Abandoned Coal mine. The old coal tipple is the last remnant of the many coal mines that operated in the Nanaimo area from 1852 until 1953. The Nanaimo coal fields were of high quality and close to a good port, and were therefore a very valuable source of fuel for the steamships plying the Pacific, as well as local industries.

The Morden mine started operating in 1913, but was never a profitable mine and closed in 1921. Another attempt was made in 1930, but only 3000 tons of coal were mined before it shut down for good.

The area around the tipple is fenced off for public safety. The parking lot for the park is also the trailhead for a trail that runs 1.2 km to the Nanaimo River along a historic railway right-of-way.
