Two 10" disappearing carriage guns were mounted here from 1899 to 1939.

Battery Ward was named on March 30, 1903 in honor of Major General Artemas Ward, Continental Army, who served during the Revolutionary war and who died October 28, 1800 at Shrewsbury, Massachusetts.
