Withers Swash (Myrtle Beach, South Carolina) | river

USA / South Carolina / Myrtle Beach / Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

The word "swash" in the southeastern US usually refers to a channel of water through or behind a sand bank, but in this case, Withers Swash appears to be a small creek that empties into the ocean. The amount of water in Withers varies quite a bit and the channel itself has changed over time. Sand replenishment on the beach has kept tides away in recent years, but in the 1970s and early 1980s beach erosion became so severe that waves would crash into the channel, creating turbulent water all the way to the Ocean Blvd bridge. At high tide, crossing the swash by foot was impossible and swimming was dangerous.
