On 30 October 2000 approximately 200 tonnes of toxic waste were ignited, releasing a 90 m high cloud of gas that engulfed the village of Sandhurst. The explosion forced the evacuation of 60 residents on health and safety grounds. The site has now been sold to Ronson's Reclamation.
